Preventative & Wellness Care

The moment your new pet enters your home, it’s time to start thinking about the preventative care they’re going to need. Developing a preventative care plan early in your pet’s life will determine their well-being in the years that follow. At Ohio Pet Vet, we’re fully equipped to give your pet the care they require for long and carefree life. This includes cat and dog vaccinations and exams. Proper nutrition and periodic teeth cleanings are essential to your pet’s longevity as well, and our capable team will help you make the best choices for your loved one.

Preventative pet care begins with cat and dog vaccinations and a thorough examination. There’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all pet care plan, so we have to consider different factors to tailor the appropriate course of treatment for every patient. Whether or not your pet will need certain vaccinations or tests depends on their:

  • Age
  • Exposure
  • Lifestyle
  • Overall health

Protecting Your Pet from Disease

Once these factors are taken into account, we will walk you and your pet through the vaccination process. New puppies and kittens usually require a series of booster vaccines over a span of several months, until it’s built up in their system. Overall, the most common vaccines we offer at Ohio Pet Vet include:

  • Rabies
  • Distemper/hepatitis/parainfluenza/parvovirus
  • Leptospirosis
  • Bordetella (kennel cough)
  • Lyme
  • Bivalent canine influenza (protects against the H3N2 and H3N8 strains of canine flu)

The rabies vaccine is required by law and will always be given unless your pet has a medical reason that our veterinarians believe would make it not in your pet’s best interest to receive.

We recommend the bivalent canine influenza vaccine for dogs that board, go to daycare or visit the dog park. Canine flu is a highly contagious, airborne virus that can be potentially life-threatening for puppies and senior dogs. Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, fever and lethargy.

We are happy to discuss all of your pet’s options with you so that we can build the best treatment regimen to keep them healthy!

Caring for Your Pet in Their Golden Years

As your pet advances in age, their treatment protocol will change. We expand our regular preventative screenings to accommodate senior pets. This includes blood work and imaging that we offer to younger pets. Just as with humans, senior pets often require more intensive care to protect them from potential hazards and to keep them healthy and comfortable. At Ohio Pet Vet, our team is dedicated to seeing your pet through their whole life’s journey and making sure they thrive.
